Richard Garriott: il genio creativo
Richard Allen Garriott alias Lord British è un autore di videogiochi e astronauta inglese naturalizzato statunitense.
E' nato a Cambridge, Inghilterra e cresciuto in Texas, figlio di Owen K. Garriott, un astronauta dello Skylab e dello Spacelab. Durante le scuole superiori , cominciò ad interessarsi ai computer e cominciò a studiare programmazione da autodidatta, creando dei giochi per computer di ambientazione fantasy. Qui prese anche il soprannome di Lord British dagli studenti più grandi, per via del suo accento inglese.
Richard continuò a programmare diversi giochi e produsse il suo primo gioco ad essere pubblicato, Akalabeth: World of Doom, nell'estate del 1980 mentre lavorava per un negozio di ComputerLand. Garriott guadagnò da Akalabeth una somma più che sufficiente per pagare e continuare i propri studi. In autunno entrò all'Università di Austin.
Sempre nel 1980 , Garriott creò la serie di videogiochi di ruolo Ultima (i sequel del primo erano numerati con numeri romani, per esempio Ultima II, Ultima III e così via). Programmati originariamente per macchine Apple II, furono pubblicati per la prima volta dalla California Pacific Computers, e venduti in borse di plastica ziploc agli acquirenti. La seconda parte fu pubblicata dalla Sierra On-Line. Già dal terzo in poi, i giochi ebbero un così largo seguito che Garriott (insieme a suo fratello Robert, al padre ed altri) fondò la Origin Systems, la sua software house, per gestire da sé la pubblicazione e distribuzione dei titoli, da questo punto in poi disponibili su molte piattaforme. Origin diventò in poco tempo una delle software house più influenti sul mercato videoludico mondiale.
Garriott vendette la Origin alla Electronic Arts nel Settembre 1992. Nel 2000 il suo rapporto con la E A e' terminato, con l'abbandono di Garriott della compagnia che egli stesso aveva creato.
È rientrato nell'industria videoludica fondando nell'aprile 2000 la Destination Games insieme a suo fratello e con Starr Long (produttore di Ultima Online). Al termine del patto di non-concorrenza con la EA un anno dopo, la Destination firma un accordo con la NCsoft, venendo poi completamente assorbita da quest'ultima, divenendo così il CEO di NCSoft degli HeadQuarters ad Austin, e ricoprendo un ruolo di produttore e designer di nuovi MMORPG.
Recente il suo divorzio anche con la NCSoft.
Garriott ha costruito una casa stregata/museo vicino alla sua abitazione, chiamata Britannia Manor a Austin, Texas. Promuove progetti legati al volo spaziale privato, è vicepresidente della Space Adventures e fa parte della commissione dell'X-Prize.
Garriott è entrato a far parte della Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame nel 2006.
Nel 2008, pagando 30 milioni di dollari all'Agenzia Spaziale Russa, è entrato a far parte del ristretto "club" degli "astronauti miliardari" partecipando alla missione spaziale Sojuz TMA-13 lanciata il 12 Ottobre e raggiungendo la Stazione Spaziale Internazionale due giorni dopo. La missione è terminata il 24 ottobre successivo.

A significant figure in the video game industry, Garriott was originally a game designer and programmer, but now engages in various aspects of computer game development and business Garriott was born in Cambridge, England, and raised in Nassau Bay, Texas. He is the son of scientist Owen K. Garriott, who became an astronaut and flew with Skylab 3 and Space Shuttle mission STS-9. At Clear Creek High School, he took an interest in computers and began self-directed courses in programming in which he created fantasy computer games. Garriott uses the name to this day for his various gaming characters, including Ultima character Lord British and Tabula Rasa character General British, despite the fact that Garriott's parents moved to Texas when he was a baby and — despite his nickname and birthplace — his accent is American rather than British.
Richard continued programming many games. He produced his first published game, Akalabeth, in the summer of 1980 while working at a ComputerLand retail store. Garriott earned more than enough money from Akalabeth to pay to continue his education. In the fall, he entered the University of Texas at Austin. In the early 1980s, Garriott developed the Ultima computer game series (sequels after the first were numbered, such as Ultima II, Ultima III and so on). Originally programmed for the Apple II, the first was published by California Pacific Computers, and sold in Ziploc plastic bags to interested parties. The second part was published by Sierra On-Line. By the time he developed his third installment, the games had such a large following that Garriott (along with his brother, Robert, and father and others) established Origin Systems, their own video game publisher, to handle the publishing and distribution of his title, now available on several platforms.
Garriott sold Origin to Electronic Arts in September 1992. In 1999 and 2000, EA canceled all of Origin's new development projects,. In the midst of these events, Garriott resigned from the company and returned to the industry by forming Destination Games in April 2000 with his brother and Starr Long (the producer of Ultima Online). Once Garriott's non-compete agreement with EA expired a year later, Destination partnered with NCsoft where he acted as a producer and designer of MMORPGs. After that, he became the current CEO of NCsoft Austin, also known as NC Interactive. He leaved NCsoft in 2008.
Garriott built a "haunted house"/museum at his residence called Britannia Manor in Austin, Texas. He also promotes private space flight as vice-chairman of the board of directors for Space Adventures and as a trustee of the X-Prize.
September 28, 2007, Space Adventures announced that Garriott would fly to the International Space Station in October 2008 as the sixth space tourist, reportedly paying $30 million USD. On October 12, 2008, Garriott became the second second-generation space traveler and the first offspring of an American astronaut to go into space, and the second person to wear the British Union flag in space. The Soyuz docked with the station on October 14, and Garriott returned to Earth on October 24 aboard the Soyuz TMA-12 with two members of Expedition 17, cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Sergei Volkov.
